My 12-week exploratory class made the above examples. We began the class by reading Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are.” Then we reread the book through the eyes of an illustrator and noted all the rich textures. To introduce this lesson, we watched this cute video about Matisse. We looked at his work and how he created rooms using perspective and color. We took our lesson in one point perspective further and created themed rooms. Students used colored pencils to add value and create depth through shading.
